Journey Home

Part of our Tropical Island Bliss Series

We have a rich history as Moluccan people. In the early 1940’s, during World War II, many of our people were displaced by the Dutch colonial authorities. They were forced to leave their homelands and were and were scattered across different parts of Indonesia and the Netherlands. The displacement was a result of their support for the Dutch during the war. It is a complex and significant chapter in our history highlighting both the challenge and resilience of our people.

The short term impacts on our people:

  • Loss of homes and belongings

  • Separation from family and community

  • Emotional trauma and distress

  • Challenges in finding employment and rebuilding lives

The long term impact on our people:

  • Loss of culture and language

  • Identity struggles an assimilation pressure

  • Intergenerational trauma and mental health

  • Difficulty maintaining connections to homeland

  • Socio-economic disparities and marginalisation

The Island Identity GG gives parcipants the opportuntiy to address issues above by way of:

Cultural cultivation; by participating in cultural workshops and heritage tours, families can preserve and pass down traditions, language and customs to future generations.

Identity and belonging; these activities help individuals and families develop a stronger sense of identity and belong by reconnecting them with their Moluccan heritage, roots and culture.

Emotional wellbeing; Re-establishing connections with one’s roots has huge capacity to provide a sense of comfort, pride and emotional fulfillment, promoting overall wellbeing.

Intergenerational bonds; through our story telling sessions and ‘silsilah’ family history, research, these activities foster stronger bonds between different generations within the family, promoting understanding and unity.

Community engagement; By participating in local community events and volunteer opportunities, displaced families can actively engage with their motherland roots, community, building new connections that contribute to positve change.

Cross-cultural understanding; promote understanding and appreciation, both within displaced Moluccan families and the broader context of our Moluccan and Indonesian communities, fostering empathy and respect for the diverse cultures that make Indonesia.
